Presentación de Russ Ladly: «Peces en la Cuenca Hidrográfica del Río Puyallup»/ Presentation «Fisheries in the Puyallup River Basin» by Russ Ladley.

El 4 de abril asistí a la presentación de Russ Ladley, Director de Protección de Recursos Ambientales del Pueblo Nativo Americano Puyallup, acerca de los peces en la cuenca hidrográfica del Río Puyallup. Esta presentación fue parte del Seminario Ambiental de la Universidad de Washington Tacoma organizado por el Profesor Dan Shugar. Ya que estoy trabajando con la memoria de la ecología de la cuenca del Río Puyallup, esta presentación fue muy interesante para mí.

April 4th, I attended a talk by Russ Ladley, Environmental Resource Protection Manager of the Puyallup Tribe, about fisheries in the Puyallup River Basin. This presentation was part of the UW Tacoma Environmental Seminar Series organized by Professor Dan Shugar. Since I am working on the memory and ecology of the Puyallup watershed, this was a very interesting presentation for me.

Al principio, la charla se centró en la historia de la cuenca hidrográfica y de la gestión que se ha realizado. Russ Ladley mostró algunas de las intervenciones realizadas en el río como la presa Electrom y la presa Buckley, y su impacto al salmón y en toda la ecología del río.

The beginning of the talk was focused on the history of the watershed and the management that has been made. Russ Ladley showed some of the human interventions in the river like Electrom Dam or Buckley Dam and their impact on salmon and on the whole ecology of the river.

Otro aspecto tratado por Russ Ladley fue la canalización del río y su impacto, como la pérdida de hábitat para el salmón o la necesidad de un continuo mantenimiento. Además, mencionó algunos de los proyectos para retirar los muros del cauce. Tres de estos proyectos han sido ya realizados y hay otros tantos pendientes de hacer. Sin embargo, son proyectos muy caros. También habló sobre la situación de las diferentes especies de peces en la cuenca.

Another aspect that was dealt by Russ Ladley was the channelization of the river and its impact, like the loss of habitat for salmon or the the necessity of a continuous maintenance. In addition, he mentioned some of the projects to build setback levees. Three of these projects have been already done and there are others to be done. However, they are very expensive projects. He also talked about the situation of the different species of fishes in the watershed.

Tras esta presentación, me di cuenta de que necesitaba encontrarme con Russ Ladley para preguntarle más preguntas sobre la cuenca y sobre su ecología (Véase reunión del 15 de mayo).

After this presentation, I realize I needed to meet Russ Ladley to ask him more questions about the watershed and its ecology (See meeting in May 15th).
